`Medical device` is the name given to health-oriented products such as equipment, machines, materials, objects or systems used in medicine, odontology or laboratories, for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation or contraception, and that don’t use pharmacologic, immunologic or metabolic means to perform its main function in human beings.

Medical devices vary in complexity and application and include a wide range, from disposable gloves to implants and prosthetics.

The combined medical devices are those that combine the medical device with drugs and/or biological products. Examples of these can be medical devices impregnated with some drug or biological product, like catheters with antimicrobial agents, condoms with spermicide, drug-releasing stents, pre-filled syringes, insulin injectors, inhalers, etc.
